Prescribing Safety Indicators
These searches will help identify patients who have recently been prescribed medication which may be harmful. The criteria have been taken from a list of published Prescribing Safety Indicators, which focus particularly on the potentially risky use of drugs like NSAIDs, metformin, diltiazem or verapamil in patients with renal impairment or heart failure, or antipsychotics in patients with dementia. There are also searches to identify patients with chronic disease who may have missed follow up for some time, e.g. diabetics who have not had a HBA1C done for the past 2 years. The searches may be imported into your EMIS Web population reports folder and run as a series of patient safety audits. This may also be useful for appraisal purposes as a quality improvement exercise.
